After completing our graduation exams from high school, we decided to do civil service as a voluntary year in a foreign country as opposed to military service. With our organization “Weltweite Initiative für Soziales Engagement e.V.” (World Wide Initiative For Social Commitment (Registered Association)" we travelled to Guatemala and have lived here in Cobán since the beginning of September 2005. With our Spanish teacher, Alfonso Tujab, we saw the shocking situation at the "Basurero" (garbage dump) and became acquainted with Padre Sergio Godoy and the project "Comunidad Esperanza" led by him.

Initially convinced of the project’s necessity and quality, we began to work there at the beginning of October 2005. Our activities include general assistance, literacy lessons, meal distribution and meaningful leisure activities such as games and sports that develop social skills. When we experienced the current project’s insufficient capacity firsthand and heard about the plan for the "City of Hope", we decided to help obtain the necessary financial resources by creating this webpage. We hope to gain many supporters for the project in this way! You’ll find more information on our daily work in the 2nd edition of the German volunteer newspaper "Schwarz auf WISE" (www.schwarz-auf-wise.de).
