Giving Hope! PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 August 2006
We, Johannes, Benjamin and Malte, are completing our civil service here, in Cobán, Guatemala  as a voluntary social year, with the "World Wide Initiative For Social Commitment (Registered Association)" organization. We currently work in "Comunidad Esperanza“   ("Community of Hope"), a combination of day-care and school for children and adolescents from poor quarters on the rim of Cobán.  Since the day-care is currently inadequate by far due to the prevailing lack of education and medical supply, an enlargement of the project is absolutely necessary. The plan for this project bears the name "City of Hope“ and is the expansion of the existing services.

Naturally, this expansion is associated with certain costs, which will be met with donations. There is some support available from the Guatemalan government, but it is very limited and in no way comparable to that of Germany. Therefore, we have made it our duty to ask private individuals, companies and other types of donors for the necessary financial resources. If everyone contributes a small part to the big sum, it will be possible for many people in Cobán have a chance at a better future - we pack it on!

Top, The bet goes! (REWE’s Santa Claus Bet) PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 11 December 2005

When a challenge was offered by local supermarket “Rewe”, which should bring in 1,000 euros for a good purpose, Ben’s former school “Gymnasium Eckental” didn’t hesitate for a minute to take it on. The task was to gather 50 Santa Clauses outside the store on 10 December at 4:00 PM to solicit donations. And so it happened. There were far more than 50 red coats, beards and round bellies to count that day as the festive figures did their best to intone the carol “Lasst uns froh und munter sein” (Let Us Be Joyful and Happy). Students from all grades as well as teachers disguised themselves and organized the holiday fundraiser to help the disadvantaged children of Cobán to build their first school.
